Why does the map freeze when dragging?

Posted on August 3, 2022

Flightplan can display your map only as fast as Google Maps provides the data. Each time you interact with the map (i.e drag, click/new waypoint, zoom, etc.) Google Maps provides the requested map, then notifies Flightplan that it’s done sending data. Flightplan disables interaction with the map until it has received the notification that Google Maps is finished redrawing the map.

Google Maps may be especially slow when viewing remote areas (extreme latitudes near the poles in particular) where data may be incomplete and satellite imagery thin. This may cause the map navigation to become “choppy”. If you let Google Maps “catch up” for a few seconds it should become more smooth. In remote areas it is recommended that you switch to Roadmap view while navigating, then switch to Satellite when you find the area you want to examine.

Note: If you have an internet connection with limited bandwidth, Flightplan will need to share it with Microsoft Flight Simulator (or any other programs that use the internet) any time you interact with a map including GPS Follow mode. Flightplan requires a constant internet connection to function properly. It will automatically detect if the internet connection drops and will turn off GPS Follow. You should be able to continue interacting with the map you are viewing until you reach the limits of the map imagery/data. Flightplan will continue to check for an internet connection every few seconds, but if the outage persists it will “turn off” the map display until the internet connection returns.
